During my residency five years ago at the International Studio & Curatorial Program NY, which was close to Times Square, I met a Wall Street professional who invited me to take photographs of his office. It turned out that he worked in an institution which dealt with data from banks worldwide. My project at that time, “relentless structure,“ couldn’t have happened without us bumping into each other, because as an Artist in Residence, I couldn’t get access to those institutions.
Recently I was on a working trip to Chicago and New York where I again met the “American Friend,“ who is still working at Wall Street. At the same time, I became interested in the book “Decoded,“ written by the hip hop legend Jay-Z. Both men are African American. Jay-Z had grown up in the “ghetto“ of Brooklyn, and his song “Made in America“ touched me since it is about “having made it.“ My new project is dedicated to my “American Friend,“ who has also “made it“ in America.
The design of “Decoded“ and the visual relationships between text and images in videos from Jay-Z and Kanye West have inspired me to create the photo project, “Made in America / Made in Russia.“ It was shown at the Rodchenko International School of Photography and Multimedia in Moscow at the end of my residency at the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow. The work is a digital dialogue between me and my “American Friend,“ and refers to political events happening at that time, such as Occupy Wall Street, the death of Steve Jobs and Marsh of Millions in Moscow.

For the last year, Fred Dewey has conducted an open working group on the works of Hannah Arendt at Berlin’s General Public. He has written on art, theory, culture, and politics for numerous publications and ran a cultural public space in Los Angeles for fifteen years, Beyond Baroque. He teaches at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and is a writer, teacher, publisher, editor, critic, activist, and thinker.

“The Power of Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Utopia“ At the junction Randolph and Desplaines Street, the Haymarket Square, in 1886 battles were fought, from which the May 1st emerged as a celebration of labor. It was fought for the enforcement of the eight-hour day. The “Haymarket Riots“ were brutally suppressed. “Made in America“ is a track from the Jay-Z and Kanye West published hip-hop album “Watch the Throne,“ which appeared in 2011. Along with Warren Buffet, Jay-Z is one of the richest men in the United States. He is of African-American descent, grew up in the ghetto of Brooklyn NY, and – with his colleague Kanye West – has discussed the pride to, have “made it“ in America. The title “Made in America“ represents the contradictions of the “American Dream“.
“... Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Hope“ Linda Weiss specifically felt the need to make political action a topic because the appropriation of politically won progress by conservative forces creates frustration and needs a response. She explored this in the former photo-piece "Sunset Bullet Time (Rockefeller Center NY) – To Think the Outside (Power)" in 2010. She has continued her exploration on site and political action in Chicago at Lincoln Square. Therefore she uses the historical matrix in relation to current policy as a metaphor for the asserted audacity of hope. On the platform of Dank Haus Chicago, situated close to Lincoln Square, she takes a shot-by-shot panorama. The pictures are intercut with quotations from the text “What I See in Lincoln's Eyes,“ written by Barack Obama.

“The Power of Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Utopia“ An der Kreuzung Randolph und Desplaines Street, dem Haymarket Square, wurden 1886 Kämpfe ausgetragen, aus welchen der 1. Mai als Festtag der Arbeiter hervorging. Es wurde um die Durchsetzung des Achtstundentages gekämpft. Die "Haymarket Riots" wurden blutig niedergeschlagen. „Made in America“ ist ein Titel aus dem von Jay-Z und Kanye West 2011 publizierten HipHop-Album „Watch the Throne“. Jay-Z gehört neben Warren Buffett zu den reichsten Männern der USA. Er ist afro-amerikanischer Herkunft, wuchs im Ghetto von Brooklyn NY auf und thematisiert mit seinem Kollegen Kanye West den Stolz, es in Amerika „geschafft“ zu haben. Der Titel „Made in America“ verkörpert die Widersprüchlichkeit des „American Dream“.

Word, Thinking, Love, and Anger in Relation to Site, Political Action, and Hope“ Linda Weiss hat in der Fotoarbeit "Sunset Bullet Time (Rockefeller Center NY) – To Think the Outside (Power)" die Problematik der politischen Handlungsfähigkeit formuliert, in welcher die Vereinnahmung politisch erkämpfter Errungenschaften seitens konservativer Kräfte und der zu überwindenden Frustration verhandelt wird. In der weiteren Fotoarbeit "Sunset Bullet Time (Lincoln Square Chicago) – Barack Obama (What I See in Lincoln's Eyes)" setzt sie ihre Forschung über den Ort in Bezug zu politischem Handeln fort. Deshalb verwendet sie hier die Matrix der Geschichte in Relation zur gegenwärtigen Politik als Metapher für den proklamierten Mut zur Hoffnung. Auf der Plattform des Dank-Haus-Chicago, am Lincoln Square gelegen, erstellt Linda Weiss „Shot by Shot“ ein Panorama. Die Bilder werden von ihr mit Zitaten aus dem Text "What I See in Lincoln's Eyes" von Barack Obama verknüpft.

Operation Video Tag: the Quest for Semiotic Supremacy
DdB Media and Liverpool-based American artist Deena DeNaro-Bickerstaffe are curating a short programme of Subvertisements and Culture-Jamming actions called Operation Video Tag which will be shown during the Long Night of the Liverpool Biennial on 18th November, 2010.
Culture jamming entails transforming mass media to produce ironic or satirical commentary about itself, using the original medium’s communication method. Many culture jams are simply aimed at exposing questionable political assumptions behind commercial culture so that people can momentarily consider the branded environment in which they live.
In addition to Ms. DeNaro-Bickerstaffe’s film, Reverse the Wave, subvertisements from artists like Viki Eagle, Beto Shwafaty, as well as work from culture jamming veterans such as the Billboard Liberation Front and TradeMark G and the Evolution Control Committee.
From 6pm until midnight, these culture-jamming works will be projected on buildings and facades around Liverpool during the Long Night events scheduled for the Liverpool Biennial on 18th November. Operation Video Tag will target at least 5 high-profile Biennial locations during the night running it’s culture jamming programme on a short loop, showing each piece several times at each location.

Kiezbiennale / neighbourhood biennale / July 2010 / video- and art work contributions to be screened at the market stall cinema "weekly world making" in a weekly market in multi-storey residential estates in East Berlin "1# - the market research institution Lichtenberg: weekly world making" explores and compares consumers and traders rites, their history and matters of taste. On weekly markets we install market booths including a cinema and participatory artwork & exhibitions. Therefore we invite artists, or other professionals and wider public to cooperate with market crowds or staff, implementing public art projects or contributions for the market stall cinema. "Weekly world making" starts from worlds already on hand; the making is a remaking. The market research institution Lichtenberg visits and illustrates distinctions of taste and ideas of peoples self image as keepers, owners, givers and takers, and taps their perception within shopping rituals or their refusals.

In her work “Sunset Bullet Time (Rockefeller Center NY) - To Think the Outside (Power)” the artist Linda Weiss treats the essay “To Think the Outside (Power)” (Gilles Deleuze, Foucault) like an editor and “cuts” 35 quotations from the text. They are combined with a panoramic sweep taken on top of Rockefeller Center.
Hereby the matrix of economy is used as a metaphor for the thought of power. While in this piece the icon of economy in the 1930s, John D. Rockefeller, is the starting point. “Shot by Shot” compiles a panorama. The camera’s track along the Empire State Building and the still-under-construction Bank of America Tower among other buildings creates an architectonical relationship with today’s economy and its orders.
The title of the exhibition “TO THINK THE OUTSIDE” is taken from the text video “TO BE IN THE CITY”, which lists a woman’s one hundred thoughts on Paris's and New York’s screen, architecture, political action and on love. Therein lies the question whether it is possible to take an outside view from within a structure. The peripheral perspective is realized by the acting “Woman with the Camera” by doing a “Shot by Shot” version from the center to the outside. It takes up the metaphor of the panopticon which stands for the “dispositive of power”.
The need for the artist to topicalize the “outside of structure” sprang from the question in how far involvement in relations of power and production and the integration into existing structures creates a state of helplessness towards that structure. “To Think the Outside” clarifies that thought can only be related to time and to a concrete situation (the inside). The idea of the text changes the outlook on the speaking/thinking/acting relationship.
The video “TO BE IN THE CITY” will also be shown in the film program “stadt land film” at Kino Arsenal 2 Berlin on May 11 at 5 pm. The film program was set up in concordance with the seminar of the same name at University of Arts Berlin by Madeleine Bernstorff.

The exhibition "The Art of Speculation" picks the different levels of meaning of the term speculation as its central topic. The title is in reference to Philip Carret's 1930 book of the same name which is considered a classic of economics. Speculations in the form of utopias have accrued a bad name through the economic and humanitarian catastrophes they evoked especially when made official policy. Nevertheless, there is no reason for artists to relinquish voicing their wishes and desires totally. Wishing and desire remain an essential part of human existence. Fiction is necessary for research and science, or as Charles Darwin put it: " Without speculation there is no new observation."
The international group exhibition The Art of Speculation together with events in cultural theory, literature, film and performance is part of Kunstverein Wolfsburg's contribution to Phaenomenale 2010, which the Kunstverein has been organizing in cooperation with the Kulturbüro der Stadt Wolfsburg and Science Center phaeno since 2007.
