2011 was a vintage year for Jaume Plensa, with the permanent installation of a monumental sculpture, Alchemist, on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There was also the raising of Echo, a huge 14 metre high sculpture of a girl’s head, which spent the spring and summer in Madison Square Park, in central Manhattan. Lastly, there was his most important retrospective to date, organised by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Great Britain, where his huge pieces were showcased in a superb natural environment. All of these events were a great success with the public, reaching a vast and much bigger audience than usual.

For his forthcoming exhibition in Paris, Jaume Plensa has developed new figures in stainless steel placed on large stones. These modern hermits or Stylites seem to be withdrawn, silent observers of the hustle and bustle. The mid-sized sculptures will be accompanied by a collection of drawings on the same theme.
