Kimberly Clark present the hedonistic but also deeply disturbing image of an exaggerated nightlife, on the borderline of excess. Although separated by two decades, their installations, sculptures and videos evoke the common idiom of the first novels by the New York writers Brett Easton and Jay Mclnerney and the relentless New York clubbing race of the '80s. 'It's Six A.M. Do You Know Where You Are?' is the first chapter of Jay Mclnerney's book Bright Lights, Big City (1984).
However, the setting is not New York but Rotterdam, in the middle of the 00's, where the artists Iris van Dongen, Eveline van de Griend and Ellemieke Schoenmaker live and work together under the designation Kimberly Clark. Scenes from parties, static images or movements in suspension and representations of blissfulness, provocation, glamour, desolation, boredom, stimulation, the concentrated remains of a nightlong euphoria jumbled together with cosmetics (empty Marlboro packets, bottles and cans of beer, lipstick, etc), compose a kind of group portrait (or self-portrait?) with explicit signs of psychological fluctuation (Isissyndrome, 05:00 still bored, 2006). At the centre is always the female figure, trendy attractive, narcissistic and, at the same time, a live-size simulacrum, juxtaposing stereotypes of the female identity with shocking views of the night and mounds of consumer rubbish (Swansong - Give her enough to shake her world, Hooley, 2007). In the work Crusade, Rotterdam the pile of totally crushed discarded objects gains an even more dramatic dimension, and the concept of time is constricted unbearably under the weight of a personal drama. The female figure which climbs over the building materials is a reflection of and, at the same time, a profane reflection to the female symbol of the French Revolution as depicted in Delacroix's famous painting Liberty Leading the People. The female figure appears as a suffering and rebellious body on the site of sacrifice.
